A Prayer For All Of Life's Work

Jesus taught his disciples to pray the following: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name..." [You can find the complete prayer here.]

Hallowed.

In this word, and in the opening request of the prayer that Jesus has given us to pray, we are asking that God's unparalleled identity, character and presence would be known by us and all whom we are planted among. We are asking for vivid awareness. We are asking for every aspect of our lives to be caught up with and shaped by The One And Only.

Every aspect of our lives. Including our work and daily activity.

And this practical vision of living with God has captured the imaginations and formed the practices of Jesus' followers throughout the centuries, including those who wrote the following prayer [From Coventry Cathedral, which was founded in 1043 and destroyed in 1940]:

Hallowed be Thy name in Industry:
God be in my hands and in my making.
Holy, Holy, Holy; Lord God of Hosts;
Heaven and earth of full of Thy Glory.

Hallowed be Thy name in the Arts:
God be in my sense and in my creating.
Holy, holy, holy; Lord God of Hosts;
Heaven and earth of full of Thy Glory.

Hallowed be Thy name in Commerce:
God be at my desk and in my trading.
Holy, holy, holy; Lord God of Hosts;
Heaven and earth are full of Thy Glory.

Hallowed be Thy name in Government:
God be in my plans and in my deciding.
Holy, holy, holy; Lord God of Hosts;
Heaven and earth are full of Thy Glory.

Hallowed be Thy name in Education:
God be in my mind and in my growing.
Holy, holy, holy; Lord God of Hosts;
Heaven and earth are full of Thy Glory.

Hallowed be Thy name in the Home:
God be in my heart and in my loving.
Holy, holy, holy; Lord God of Hosts;
Heaven and earth are fully of Thy Glory.
