Sunday Shorts: July 2, 2017
Sunday Shorts are a brief rewind of Kaleo's weekly gatherings intended to equip the kommunity to live into what we're exploring together throughout the week.
X: TEN WORDS FOR THE CONTRAST COMMUNITY [PART ONE: GOD]
Then God began to speak directly to all the people. I am the Eternal your God. I led you out of Egypt and liberated you from lives of slavery and oppression.
THE STORY BEHIND THESE WORDS
The backstory of the ten words that our text introduces can be found in the preceding words of Exodus [chapters 1-19].
THE ONE BEHIND THESE WORDS
In addition to the text above, consider the words of Exodus 3:7-8 and the essence, character and posture of the One we refer to as God, the liberating One who gave the ten words.
THE INVITATION OF THESE WORDS
They invite us to take a long look into the very being of the One we call God, and to engage the ten words [Exodus 20:1-17] with eyes and ears to see and hear the liberating, loving, life giving essence of God.
They invite us to experience anew and participate in the society that God has been and is creating [Notice the pattern of re-contextualization and invitation for each generation that we see in the giving of the law again in Deuteronomy 5, as well as in Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:17-20 and following].
They invite us to revel in and respond to the grace God has extended and continues to extend [When these ten words are compared to our lives they often reveal a gap between what could be and what is. In the midst of this, however, the posture of God is grace and liberation, not shame and condemnation, which the Exodus account reveals and the words of Romans 7:15-25, followed by Romans 8, make abundantly clear!].
